Self doubt can be a major obstacle for many writers, but it’s important to remember that it’s a common experience and that there are strategies for overcoming it. In this blog post, we’ll explore some tips for overcoming self doubt and building confidence in your writing.

One of the biggest causes of self doubt is the fear of failure. It’s natural to want to produce perfect work, but it’s important to remember that failure is a part of the learning process. Instead of focusing on avoiding failure, try to focus on the process of writing and the joy it brings. Remember that every writer has bad days and that it’s okay to make mistakes.

Another cause of self doubt is comparison to other writers. It’s easy to look at the success of other writers and feel like your own work is inadequate, but it’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and accomplishments. Practice being an original copy. Which you are, and you should take pride in that.
One effective way to overcome self doubt is to establish a writing routine. Consistency is key, so try to set aside a specific time each day to write, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This will help you build momentum and develop a sense of discipline. Write even when no one sees it but you.
Another tip is to surround yourself with supportive people. This is one of my most difficult struggles. Find a writing group or community where you can share your work and receive constructive feedback. It requires effort, but has become much easier with the advances of the internet. This will not only help you improve your writing, but it will also give you a sense of accountability.
Finally, don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things. Experiment with different writing styles and genres, and don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone. The more you challenge yourself, the more you’ll learn about your own writing and the more confident you’ll become in your abilities.
Self doubt is a common experience for writers, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. By focusing on the process, surrounding yourself with supportive people, establishing a writing routine, and taking risks, you can overcome self doubt and build confidence in your writing. Remember to be kind to yourself and enjoy the journey.
I focus on writing and creating in general, but these strategies are important for any achievement in life. Understanding your own personal obstacles is necessary to build confidence. Confidence is necessary for success. Therefore as a struggling writer who doubts myself probably more than anyone on the planet I will close with a poem I wrote about self-doubt.
“Silencing the Inner Critic: Overcoming Self Doubt”
Self doubt, a whisper in the mind,
That echoes doubts of every kind,
A constant voice that’s hard to shake,
A cloud that follows,
a weight to take.
It tells us we’re not good enough,
That we’re unworthy, weak and rough,
That we’re not smart or pretty or kind,
That there are others who are more refined.
It creeps into our thoughts and dreams,
Like a poison, it taints and streams,
Through every part of who we are,
And leaves us feeling small and scarred.
But self doubt, it can be overcome,
With strength, with love, with hope and some,
Self compassion and belief in who we are,
We can rise above it, we can go far.
We must remind ourselves each day,
That we are worthy in every way,
That we have talents, strengths and light,
That we can shine with all our might.
For self doubt, it’s just a thought,
It’s not the truth, it’s not what we’ve wrought,
We are powerful, we are strong,
We can conquer anything that’s wrong.
